GARDEN UPDATE

Things are always changing and growing in the garden but those changes are a little more pronounced this time of year. Some of our summer crops are beginning to die back and we are busy pulling those out and seeding cover crops in their place. A cover crop is planted with the intention to improve the soil, rather than harvest the plant for sale or consumption. Some of the cover crops we use include sorghum sudangrass, oats, peas, clover, and rye.

Cover crops have been used for thousands of years and are an important part of sustainable farming. Cover crops have many benefits including preventing erosion, supplying nutrients to the following crops, improving water retention and drainage, breaking up compaction, increasing organic matter, and improving soil texture. This is why we put such an emphasis on cover cropping in the garden. The future of our production depends on us taking care now.

WHAT IS NEW AT THE FARM?

School Field Experiences Resume:

The farm has started the school year with the Pocket Full Of History (2nd grade) program.  As time travelers, students travel through time exploring and discovering the history of our state, our local area, our farm, and those that lived here before us.  Students and teachers engage as learners sharing the curiosity, enthusiasm, and joy of discovering the cabin and farmhouse along with the natural world. This also includes exploring the sunflower rows and rolling rocks and logs in the forest to discover what was underneath, and designing their own farm.

Join our Sustainability Efforts with Paper Recycling:

Welcome our new Paper Retriever Bin for paper recycling!   This large green and yellow container is located east of the main gate, at the end of the gravel parking lot.  The farm can raise money for recycling based on the amount of paper collected. We encourage all students, staff, and community members to regularly add paper to the bin.   Please check HERE for details on what only is accepted.
