Intro to Gardening & Soil Health (Ages 16 yrs through adults)

In this introductory course for community adults and teens, we will explore successful strategies for small-scale gardening in Michigan climates and present best practices for improving soil health by utilizing compost. This hands-on series of classes will help you prepare a space for growing various plants.

Compost Class Description: 

This compost class will provide straightforward, actionable steps to easily and successfully compost kitchen scraps and organic materials at home. Using this information, you can easily begin to produce compost to benefit your garden, plants or lawn. This class will dispel myths and expand your knowledge of the many various methods and strategies for home composters.  We will present the pros and cons of various outdoor compost bins, briefly highlight the benefits of Bokashi and vermicomposting, explain what you should and should not add to your backyard composting system and more!  We will provide demonstrations to simplify how you can begin composting in a way that works best for you and your plants.

  

Gardening Class Description: 


The plants and soil portion of this series will focus on gardening skills that benefit beginners and first time gardeners. It will provide a vivid understanding in small scale sustainable agriculture and how gardeners are a part of this process. Demonstrations and hands-on examples will be used including videos for sight oriented learners. We will discuss tools and set ups that give your plants a successful start while also being aesthetically pleasing. You will explore what makes up nutritious soils in Michigan and specific plants that might benefit the first time Michigan gardener. Such as, hybrids vs heirlooms, fabric pots vs raised beds. By the end of the session, you will be confident in your ability to start a garden and maintain it.
