ANIMAL INTERESTS

Calf Update

On Jan 3rd, 2022 we welcomed our first calf of the season! This heifer calf (female) weighed in around 80 pounds and is named Lucy after her sire, Lucy’s Boy. The BHHS Animal and Veterinary Science students chose the sire and artificially bred our 2 cows last year in March and we are all patiently awaiting our other cow to calve any day now!

Pig update

Tizzy, our year old Tamworth gilt, had her very first litter of piglets on Jan 5th! She did a fantastic job during delivery, welcoming 8 healthy piglets to the farm. Our staff, students, and 4-H members were all eager to help, and did a phenomenal job assisting her as each new piglet was born. These piglets grow fast and will be weaned from Tizzy in about 4 weeks at around 25 pounds. For now, they are about 3 pounds each! We are excited to watch them grow!  Maude, our other Tamworth, just gave birth to 4 piglets.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Developmental Kindergarten:

This school year, Bowers School Farm has partnered with Developmental Kindergarten (DK) teachers, Kathy Conniff (Eastover) and Cesiley LaCourt (Lone Pine) in an effort to make outdoor learning a regular part of the students’ curriculum. During their field trips, students become “farm detectives” to use investigative skills to solve a new set of mysteries each visit. For their most recent trip in December, students learned and wondered about the predators and prey of a farm. As they explored the farm, students studied and observed various animals for clues to help them to solve the mysteries: Is this animal a predator or prey? Who is their predator? How do they protect themselves against predators? Continuing this learning in their classrooms, students took the knowledge they gathered from investigating the animals to create their own new animal, strategizing on the characteristics that would best help their animal survive.

In January, both classes will return for another trip to Johnson Nature Center where they will be thinking like nature detectives to solve a new set of mysteries. Read our blog here to see the impactful learning that has been happening.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

AMY CARDIN

We are sure that many of you have seen Amy around the farm.  We asked her a few questions so that you could get to know her better.

How long have you worked at Bowers Farm? I am in my 12th year at Bowers Farm.

What job(s) have you worked at Bowers Farm?

I am an Educational Guide and also the Barnyard Buddies pre-school Camp Leader. Both are jobs I love!

What are your favorite things about being at Bowers Farm?

My favorite things about being at the farm are the people, the natural surroundings, and the animals. Every day is a new adventure! I love being outdoors, so it’s really a dream job.

Why would you recommend Bower’s Farm to others?

Whether it’s for a farm tour, an educational or community program, summer camp, stopping in for farm fresh produce or sliding down our tubing runs, or any other myriad activities, there is something happening in every season. We also have the BEST staff, who are like a family.

What’s your Favorite Farm Memory?

It is really hard to pick just one favorite memory. Bringing Cinnamon, our beloved llama, into a district and community leadership meeting (surprise!) was a blast. Followed very closely by animal births and getting to know so many BHS students over the years. The kindergartners from my first season at the farm are now juniors in high school!

Any additional information you’d like to share?

It sounds cheesy, but I really do think this is the best job in the world. I mean, where else could a 60+ year old suburban grandmother drive a tractor, burp a turkey, assist with animal birthing, weed a garden, pasteurize goat milk and harvest eggs...often in the same day? The thing that keeps it interesting is that every day is different, in the most magical and unexpected ways.
